electrical distribution

Since the house is heated with oil, we have a standard 200 ampere service which enters the northeast front of the house. The main power disconnect is located in our dining room, under a picture. Power is provided from a pad-mounted transforer fed by an underground 7 kilovolt line which runs 900 feet to the bottom of the field. At that point, it goes up a pole which connects the power lines along the highway.

From the dining room, power is routed via a heavy cable in pipe to a transfer switch. From the transfer switch electricity is fed to a down and upstairs east panel, a utility room panel and four cutoff switches which feed the downstairs west, the upstairs west, the shop, and the barn. All panels have ground fault interrupters where appropriate as well as arc fault interrupters

backup power

Diesel Generator

Critical systems such as telephone and computers are backed up by APC uninterruptable power supplies. Each one can run the attached equipment for up to 15 minutes if necessary. The home automation, burglary, and fire alarm equipment all have battery backup

Should a power outage last more than 15 seconds, we have an 18 kilowatt diesel generator which supplies power to the home via a 200 ampere transfer switch.

The generator is in a sound-deadened enclosure

Outside view of generator

From the outside, you can see the air intake (upper), air exhaust (lower) and exhaust pipe. The upper and lower louvers are electric - they open when the generator starts.
